Dennis Kahler wasn't exactly getting what he bargained for when he played and eventually won the "Nitro Car" scratch off game at the lottery in Georgia. When he discovered that his winning ticket would bring him the grand prize of a new Corvette, the Georgia lottery found itself in an awkward situation when it couldn't find a single agent who could provide the desired vehicle. An agent from New York, trying to enter the lottery in a different state, stepped in to take Kahler's winnings. The rest, as they say, is history. The "Nitro Car" scam was a massive bust, and although the scam itself was exposed, no other lottery games were affected in such a dramatic fashion. As promised in the original press release, "The mystery caller" who introduced himself as a lottery syndicate leader was actually a con artist who had made arrangements with a disreputable lottery outlet to move his winning ticket from one state to another. To cover his tracks, he posed as a legitimate lottery executive. This man, posing as a legitimate lottery executive, arranged to have the winner of the "Nitro Car" jackpot transferred to him in exchange for a promised share of the jackpot. The story line that went into this story was that Kahler was due to meet some business associates in January, inclusive of a possible buyer for his "Nitro Car". As was typical of lottery scam operators, the man who claimed to be the buyer took advantage of Kahler's personal crisis by contacting a supposed lottery official, demanding that he faxed him a release form. This bogus fax, however, was never received. In fact, it was the man who supposedly posed as a lottery official who called to report that the jackpot was being held at a meeting in January. (Kahler later told police that he had nothing to do with the scheme; he'd been out of town on business.) Two weeks later, the "lottery official" called again to report that the lottery was now held at a location in January. Again, he urged Kahler to fax a release form. And again, the fax never arrived. Then, on the following day, the caller reported that there had been a winning lottery at a location in New Jersey. This time, though, a police detective was called to the scene and the scammer was arrested. Of course, this isn't the only Powerball winner who has duped a Powerball jackpot winner. In fact, according to the official Powerball website, there have been more than sixteen cases in which Powerball winners have impersonated lottery executives. In one case, a Powerball winner was reported by a police officer to have told her that she would win a $1 million jackpot. Then the phony winner started calling the police. Charges were filed and the Powerball winner soon found herself in jail on unrelated fraud charges. Unfortunately, Powerball is still being played today. Even though all Powerball winners are required to obtain a legal identity and keep updating their addresses, scams and lotto jackpot winners continue to flood the Powerball scene. And that's not all. Some criminals have actually taken it upon themselves to start a Powerball playing scam from scratch, convincing innocent Powerball players that they have won a lottery jackpot when they've actually purchased Powerball tickets from a wholesaler or other secondary market dealer. In an unfortunate example, a Powerball winner was convicted of tax evasion after attempting to launder money from the Powerball jackpot over the Internet. Apparently, she'd purchased Powerball tickets from an online dealer in January. Apparently, she'd sent the tickets via email - and into the wrong hands. Authorities believe that the scam resulted in the fraudulent claim of a Powerball jackpot winner in multi-state lottery. Many of those affected have been left distraught and angry, believing that their lives had been turned upside down by someone else. Let's hope that this story is an isolated incident. The reality is that there are many different schemes and scams going on all across the nation. According to the official press release, officials are investigating whether the "loan originated from another state or from outside of the United States." So far, authorities have not released any information. They do plan to increase security at the lottery jackpot locations around the nation on Tuesday.
